Empathetic Conversations for Families: Listening Guide

Image
When a family member describes an exhausting day, listen before offering advice. Start by checking what happened and how they felt, then ask whether listening or suggestions would help. You do not need to guess their feelings correctly on the first attempt. Make room for the concern before the solution Let the person finish, briefly recap the main point, and check any interpretation of their feelings. This is reflective listening: putting the central meaning into words so the speaker can confirm or correct it. Avoid adding motives or causes they have not mentioned. Ask what help is wanted before suggesting an action, and leave the decision with the speaker.
