CDCP 2026-27: How to apply

If you missed the June 1, 2026 renewal deadline, dental expenses during the resulting coverage gap cannot be covered retroactively. Reapplications opened on June 2, 2026, but eligibility still depends on four requirements. Confirm the individual coverage start date before receiving treatment.

Check all four requirements before applying

For the Canadian Dental Care Plan, you must have no access to private dental insurance, have filed a 2025 Canadian tax return, have adjusted family net income below 90,000 Canadian dollars per year, and be a Canadian resident for tax purposes. A spouse must also have filed and meet the tax residency requirement; check a common-law partner's information too.

Available insurance generally makes an applicant ineligible even without enrollment, including coverage with premiums or limited benefits. Income alone does not establish eligibility.

What the CDCP application guide clarifies

In the original article on OnBinder, you will find document checklists, insurance-code tables and application steps. Its distinction between tax assessment notices and insurance indicators helps explain which records answer which questions, and its coverage guidance helps prepare for a dental appointment.

Separate the income test from the treatment bill

Suppose you meet all eligibility requirements and have adjusted family net income below 70,000 Canadian dollars per year. The plan covers 100% of its established fees, but a provider may charge more. That difference can still be payable, so approval does not establish that the appointment will cost nothing.

Before treatment, ask about direct billing to Sun Life, service conditions and the amount payable. Checking these points helps clarify the expense before the visit. Paying the full bill upfront does not lead to reimbursement from Sun Life; payment goes to the provider.

Match the application route to current coverage

The benefit year runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. New applicants and members who missed renewal could apply starting June 2, 2026. June 1 was the renewal deadline, not a deadline for all new applications. If you renewed on time, check the result and coverage status.

Consider using the checklist in the original article on OnBinder to prepare for an application through My Service Canada Account or the dedicated Service Canada page.
