Donation Tax Credit 2024 Dependent Eligibility

A woman reviews paperwork and sets one sheet aside as a tax adviser points to a document.

This content applies specifically to South Korea.

A dependent's donation cannot be included in the employee tax deduction if the donor exceeds the income threshold. For South Korea's year-end tax settlement, you may include a spouse's or dependent's eligible donations when the basic deduction requirements are met. The age restriction does not apply to donation deductions for returns filed on or after January 1, 2017.

Check income and donation type first

The basic deduction, a tax allowance with family eligibility rules, generally requires total annual income of at most 1 million won. For a dependent with only wage and salary income, check whether total gross salary is at most 5 million won. With other income, review annual income separately.

Special and general donations made by dependents may qualify. Political contributions and employee stock ownership association donations can be claimed only by the donor. Check the receipt's classification before including an amount in the employee's claim.

Keep the two money checks separate

When comparing figures, you need to distinguish donor eligibility from the amount used to calculate the credit. The 5 million won gross salary threshold concerns a dependent with only wage and salary income; it is not a donation allowance.

For donations made in 2024, the general donation credit rate is 15% on an eligible amount of at most 10 million won. That percentage does not establish the final saving: donation limits and calculated tax liability still constrain the credit. Separating these checks helps avoid budgeting around an overstated tax reduction.

Confirm the family relationship and tax year

A spouse, parents and adult children still need to meet the relevant relationship and income requirements. For religious organization donations, check eligibility as general donations and the separate limit calculation.

These rates concern donations made in 2024. For another tax year, check Article 59-4 of the Income Tax Act through the Korean Law Information Center and National Tax Service guidance.

Start with the receipt: compare the actual donor, donation type and year, then check whether another family member is claiming it. Use the original article on Injoys for the fuller filing checks.
