Financial Scam Tactics: 3 Types and Response Guide

This content applies specifically to South Korea.

If you have already sent money in a suspected scam, contact 112, South Korea's police emergency number, and the relevant financial company immediately. An initial reward does not establish that a later payment is safe. Start with what the offer asks for next.

Check the payment request before proceeding

Across three schemes, you can assess the actual instructions rather than the advertisement's promises:

  • Side jobs: Small rewards may lead to demands for deposits or account top-ups. Sending more to recover earlier payments increases losses.
  • Money transfer jobs: Receiving customer money in a personal account and forwarding it may move criminal proceeds. This differs from receiving a salary.
  • Principal-guaranteed investments: A repayment promise does not establish the ability to repay. Business registration does not establish financial authorization.

Separate a reward from the next instruction

Suppose you receive a small side-job reward, then an instruction to send money onward. Treat these as separate facts: the reward confirms receipt, while the transfer request needs its own assessment. Stop and verify instructions to receive and resend funds.

For a deposit demand, obtain the work, payment and refund terms in writing. Stop further payments if another deposit is required to withdraw funds. These checks allow a pause before more household money leaves the account.

Match the response to the situation and country

The reporting channels described are South Korean. If you suspect a malicious app was installed, use another phone to report it or visit a police station. Payment suspension and recovery of lost funds are separate procedures; their availability differs by scam.

A paid course is not automatically fraudulent, and involvement in transfer work does not automatically establish criminal liability. For an investment offer, a practical next step is to check regulated financial companies through FINE, the Financial Supervisory Service's service, and verify the required authorization.
