SFE Tuition Fee Errors: Correct Records Before Start

Your Student Finance England assessment shows a different tuition fee from the amount charged by your university. Confirm the course and actual fee with the university first; before the course starts, amend your existing SFE application, while after it starts, the university must report the change to the Student Loans Company.

This is easy to miss after Clearing because UCAS and SFE maintain separate records. Changing an accepted offer through UCAS does not automatically update student finance.

Confirm the fee before changing the application

Ask the university finance or registration team to confirm the campus, course name and code, academic year, start date, study mode and actual tuition fee in writing. Do not rely on a general fee displayed on its website: foundation-year classification, part-time credits and study intensity can affect the amount.

The university sets the charge, while SFE assesses how much Tuition Fee Loan applies. An amount above the applicable limit is not covered automatically, so aligning the two records helps you understand what is charged and what has been assessed.

Correcting an SFE record at the right stage

Before the course begins, open the current academic-year application in your SFE online account and update the university, course and requested loan amount. If editing is unavailable, follow the account instructions and, where applicable, upload a CO1 form with supporting evidence rather than creating a duplicate application.

After the start date, ask the university whether it has sent a Change of Circumstances to SLC. If payment is approaching, also ask whether the account can be marked as under assessment and whether a deferral or temporary arrangement is available; these depend on university policy.

A quick record-checking checklist

  • Compare the registered course and fee with the SFE notification letter.
  • Check that a Clearing change shows the new university and course.
  • Keep the university’s confirmation email and submission date.
  • Save reference numbers, but never post the SFE customer reference number publicly.

Who should check first and what to do today

This applies when an SFE tuition figure differs from the university’s confirmed charge, when the university or course changed through Clearing, or when foundation or part-time details may affect the assessment. Check first if an old institution remains on the Notification of Entitlement or the course has already started.

Today, request written confirmation of the correct course and tuition fee from the university finance or registration team. Then use the current application or ask the university to report the change, depending on the confirmed course start date, and check GOV.UK student finance guidance for the latest applicable date.
