Death registration 2026 account blocking guide

This content applies specifically to South Korea.

If you are registering a death, financial transactions in the deceased person's name are automatically blocked the day after the report is received under the system effective September 11, 2026. The trigger is receipt of the report, not the date of death. No separate family request to block transactions is needed.

What remains possible after blocking

Withdrawals, transfers and loans are blocked in principle. Deposits can still enter the account, but receiving that money requires the inheritance process. For urgent medical or funeral expenses, you can ask the financial institution about an exception withdrawal.

After checking supporting documents, the institution may transfer payment directly to the hospital, nursing home or funeral home. This exception does not allow unrestricted cash withdrawals by relatives.

Account blocks and the steps that follow

In the original article on Injoys, you can find a transaction comparison and steps for requesting expense payments and changing automatic payments. Its distinction between blocking, asset searches and inherited deposit payments helps identify which arrangements still need separate action.

Separate an urgent expense from ongoing bills

If you face a funeral invoice alongside utility bills paid from the deceased person's account, treat them as separate tasks. Ask the deposit-holding institution about documents for the funeral payment; ask the billing organization about continuing, changing or ending the utility contract.

For bills that continue, arrange another payment account or separate payment, then check the next bill. That check can help keep routine household payments from being missed while inheritance matters are handled.

Check the applicable service and deadline

This is South Korea's system. Government24 says online One-Stop Inheritance Service applications are available to first- and second-priority heirs. Check its guide for eligibility and documents.

The deadline to apply for the inquiry is 1 year after the last day of the month in which the death occurred. Accepting, accepting with limited liability or renouncing an inheritance has a different deadline: in principle, within 3 months of learning that the inheritance has begun.

For an urgent expense, you can start today by asking the financial institution which proof it needs before visiting. Consult the original article on Injoys for the preparation steps.
