Rent Cash Receipt 5-Year Application Rules

This content applies specifically to South Korea.
For rent paid on or after February 28, 2022, you can request a cash receipt within 5 years of each payment date. Applying does not require the landlord's consent or business registration. A receipt proves payment, but does not automatically produce a deduction or refund.
Prepare the records that support an application
You can apply through Hometax, South Korea's online tax service. Prepare copies of the lease agreement and resident registration record, plus payment evidence such as bank transfer records. These establish the lease terms and actual payments for tax office review.
Search Hometax for the residential rent cash receipt application, enter the lease and payment details, attach the files, and submit. Check the application result and issued receipts afterward.

What the Rent Cash Receipt guidance clarifies
In the original article on Injoys, you will find a document checklist, application steps, and a comparison of income deductions with rent tax credits. The distinction helps explain why a recorded payment may not reduce tax, while the record-checking steps can make year-end preparation easier.

A receipt is not an extra tax saving
If you already claim a rent tax credit for a payment, leave that payment out of the cash receipt income deduction. Receiving the receipt does not prevent choosing the credit if its requirements are met.
Think of the receipt as payment evidence and the deduction as a separate calculation. An income deduction reduces the income used to calculate tax; a tax credit reduces the calculated tax. The same rent cannot receive both treatments.
Check employment income and spending first
If you have only business income and no employment income, a receipt does not qualify for the same income deduction. The guidance is written for employees, whose eligible spending must exceed 25% of total salary; deduction limits also apply.
The general cash receipt deduction rate is 30%, not a refund percentage. These figures were checked against National Tax Service guidance on October 15, 2026, but its page specifies no applicable tax year. Confirm the relevant year's rules through Hometax. (verified value 25% of total salary spending threshold and 30% general cash receipt income deduction rate; the NTS guidance does not ide · source hometax.go.kr · checked 2026-10-16)
What happens after approval?
Is another application needed every month?
No. After the initial report, receipts are issued automatically on rent payment dates during the lease term. Report a lease extension or rent amount change separately.
Where is rent listed in simplified tax records?
Look under Housing Rent Transactions in the cash receipt records. Compare the listed amount with actual payments before submitting deduction documents.
Start with the payment dates
Check each past payment against the 5-year reporting period, then gather the supporting documents. You can follow the application steps in the original article on Injoys.
